Beauty Shop Culture Exhibition at SOMArts in San Francisco, Artist Talk this Saturday April 17th
If you are in the San Francisco area and are a beauty enthusiast, I have an event you do not want to miss: Head over to SOMArts Cultural Center and check out Candacy Taylor’s Beauty Shop Culture exhibit. Candacy A. Taylor is an award-winning photographer, writer and cultural critic. The exhibition features photographs, installations and sculptures that explore the contemporary manifestations of beauty shops as a form of community space. It highlights traditions and history of hair, hair care products, potions and pomades from various cultures throughout the world beginning in the sixteenth century. It includes “Hairstorian” Jeff Hafler’s amazing collection of beauty shop antiques including vintage hairdryers, a perm machine used by Veronica Lake in the 1940s, and curling iron ovens from the turn of the century! Fun times in SoMa!
Exhibition dates: Friday April 2 through Saturday April 24, 2010.

This weekend don’t miss Taylor’s artist discussion, “From Counter Culture to Beauty Culture,” on Saturday, April 17 at 2:00pm, with a reception that follows at 3:00pm. Candacy Taylor with be talking about beauty shop culture, the American diner culture and how her work investigates the American service industry through photography. This talk will be moderated by Curator and Gallery Director Justin Hoover.
